My Story
Harry Gainer Jr. is a Panama City, Florida native who is considered a legendary basketball player and coach
in Bay County. Gainer, a retired educator, taught elementary, middle, and high school for over 35 years,
teaching geography, science, physical education, and history. Gainer coached both girls and boys middle
school basketball for over 25 years during his tenure. In his career span, Gainer was known as the most
winningest basketball coach in middle school, capturing ten boy’s county basketball championships and
three girls’ championships.
Gainer, graduated from Bay High School in Panama City, FL in 1974 leaving unbroken basketball
records, including scoring over 50 points in one game and being named McDonald’s All-American player.
With several offers to Division I schools, including the University of Rhode Island, Gainer chose the
University of Montevallo’s full scholarship offer where he met his future wife, Vickie. Gainer graduated
from the University of Montevallo in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He continued his
education at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, AL and earned his Mortuary Science
degree. Gainer is a licensed Funeral Home Director and Embalmer. Gainer loves being a mentor to youth
and teaching Sunday School with his wife.
